My First Mac

by scoobydoofus @ 12/03/2008 - 23:57:45

I never touched a Mac until I was 18 years old. I knew of their existence of course, but I didn't know anyone who owned one, and I didn't really know anything about them.

I got a job as Tech Support for an ISP, and we had a couple of Macs for testing and problem solving. They were the first generation of iMacs:

iMac

A now classic design, fitting all the components of a personal computer into one neat package. I never had to use them much, but when I did, I remember thinking that they were easy to use. If you can use Windows, you can use Mac OS.

Fast forward eight years, and I ordered my first Mac in 2006.

I'd kept up with things via the internet, played with a couple of Macs at people's houses and in the Apple store, and Landers was smitten. When the Macbook was released, I decided to get one, and I can honestly say I've never looked back. I would certainly never consider getting a Windows PC again. I do still have my old PC, but it's used as a glorified network hard-drive come media centre. It stores our music and is hooked up to the stereo.

Don't get me wrong, Macs aren't perfect. I've had a couple of problems; for example, currently my laptop's battery is not being recognised and I can only use it while it's plugged into the mains. But the fact remains that the experience of using a Mac after years of fighting with a Windows PC is a pleasure every day. I can count on one hand the number of times my Mac has crashed, and most times the problem is due to a piece of software which is promptly updated and the problem goes away.

I've had to resort to using my PC on exactly one occasion - an obscure bit of software I downloaded was in a format I had never heard of, and the only programme I could find to open it was Windows only. Not bad in 18 months of usage, in my opinion.

The best thing about Mac OS is the fact that everything just works. It's seamless. Just playing with one in the Apple store does not fully illustrate how wonderful the whole package is when you get it home, and you start actually using it. And as I said, if you've used Windows, you can use Mac OSX.

Many of the features of Vista that Microsoft trumpeted about when it was released have been in OSX for a long time. The slogan for the Vista launch was "The wow starts now!"

As far as I'm concerned, the wow started 8 years ago with OSX.

I think I've gushed enough for now. I hope I've given a good overview of my Mac experience, this blog is intended to spread the gospel of OSX and if there's anything you want to know, leave a comment and I'l do my best to answer it.

The first and last time I used a Mac was when I worked as a temp in the Apple showroom in Bristol, by Temple Meads Station, in the early 1980s. I really didn't have time to fully get my head around it, as I was only there for a week, but I must say I didn't encounter any problems with it and I've seen Macs used to good effect in many a recording session.

The band we love over here uses one on stage to make one of the guitars sound like different instruments.

Noooo it's heartfelt truth from someone who has seen the light (coming out from behind the Apple logo on his laptop)!

I have a lovely new macbook too...

It arrived earlier in the week and I love it very very much...

Though, whilst I mostly have to agree re Mac, OSX and everything working, the very first thing I found when I got mine out of the box was that the Migration Assistant was completely useless on startup - I had to go back and do it later, which meant (confusingly) setting up two accounts and then transferring everything manually from the old one to the new one...

I quite like the new magsafe power cables too, I think, though suspect they may prove to be not very robust (and sooooo expensive to replace).

All these complaint aside though - the glowy apple is sexy enough to cancel out any such problems...

Ooh yours is even better than mine, then! It's been revised a few times since I got mine.

As for the migration assistant, I didn't use it. I just copied the files I wanted from my PC to the right folders on the Macbook manually, which worked for me. Were you migrating from a PC?

As for the magsafe cable, it's great, has saved my Macbook from a couple of nasty trips. Ours are holding up just fine.

Mine is currently the coolest thing EVAH...

Won't last long though, am sure!

And no, I was migrating from my previous macbook - should have been easy I think (though interwebz research shows that is common problem).

Am hoping cable will last - I went through about four of the oldstyle ones and didn't even have any kittens to contend with at that stage...
Think I may just have to be a leeeetle bit more careful...

You're obviously very rough with your magsafe! Ours has little teethmarks in it from one of our cats, but it's fine.

It's a shame the migration assistant didn't work properly - it only has one job to do, it could at least do it right!

My first Mac was a Centris 610 II classic. First with integral CD drive. We were together for 10 years before his motherboard blew. We tried to revive him but it was no good. New motherboard but never the same. He was just very poorly after that. I miss him... *sigh*

You don't do itunes help do you? I am about to throw my computer out of the window. :(

What's the problem?

:)) I just had a problem trying to burn purchased songs onto a CD from my playlist - it says I don't have any CD burner installed but I do have one, and it works, because I tried it out with Media Player.

I did it on another computer in the end - I guess that my CD burner might not be supported by itunes, although it used to be when I had itunes before. Ho hum.

No biggie - just wondered if you were an itunes guru! :))
